Tatjana Lightbourn is an A.American artist that uses conceptual narratives designed to interpret humanity upon encounter, and evoke an individual visceral experience. Through multimedia and performance installations she explores various dimensions of perception. Being raised in an Afro-Caribbean family and the youngest of seven siblings, the practice of emotional expression was scarce, and at times even unimaginable. While growing up she lived in various homes, so the role of place and space are depicted as prevalent elements of her research. She confronts the way the black body is seen in the world through seeking and questioning a place for her own body. Working with emotions associated with race, identity, mental health, and gender, her work emphasizes the transformation of tangible reality, usually by creating some way to eradicate the initial thought, into that of a more conceptual perspective. Blending and bending various vernaculars from Afro-Descendent people, a carefully extracted language emerges which through text, multimedia installation, and performative actions poetically transforms the black body and its relationship to the world. The work explores human emotions and the recognition of one’s self, by focusing on the vantage of the black body through multiple lenses and bringing both awareness and responsibility to the viewer and the body being viewed. She hopes to bridge narratives moving towards a worldly collective understanding.
